Our Principal

Dear Lafayette Families,

I sincerely hope that you had some time during your summer break to do the things you love and with the people that matter most to you.  I also hope you are relaxed, recharged, and ready to start an exciting year at Lafayette. As we all know, “Lafayette is the BEST SCHOOL in the LAND,” and I look forward to continuing the wonderful work alongside our wonderful school community as we launch the 2022-23 school year.

We have much to celebrate from the work we continue to do – STEAM Innovation; SDEM Pilot in Illustrative Math; Lighthouse School for inclusive and integrated practices in special education; “Quality Schools in Every Neighborhood” designated school in the areas of Quality Leadership, Teaching & Learning”; VAPA school; and Lafayette was selected as a “No Place for Hate” school for the fourth straight year.  We welcome our Biocircuit scientists back from UCSD for the 8th straight year; and our Sage Garden is robust and growing.

We should be proud of the progress we have made over the years, but we need to focus on the critical tenet of ensuring all students are proficient and performing to grade-level standards.  Through our Professional Learning this year, our team will share instructional practices that improve student achievement; create daily schedules that optimize student learning; use formative and summative data to guide instruction, grouping and support; and work collectively to determine what we will do if our children aren’t making progress.  We begin this important work by engaging our students to be dynamic learners, and actively involved in what they are learning. At our core is our belief in our children as “doers.”

Parents, you are a crucial part of ensuring your child’s success.  Some simple tips for assisting your student is to put away the electronics and encourage your child to pick up a book and read with you.  Please get involved with what your child is learning at school, and have frequent conversations with your child’s teacher.

Additionally, making school attendance a priority is at the heart of student learning.  Appointments, extended weekends or vacations hinder your student from gaining the important skills and knowledge that happen in your child’s classroom at Lafayette.  Learning is happening every minute, every day!  School starts promptly at 7:45 AM daily.

I look forward to the year ahead, and I know that together, as a school community, we can make a positive difference for ALL students.

Sincerely,

Anne McCarty
